Fruto is a small place in Glenn County, California. Its name means "Fruit" in Spanish. It is an unincorporated community, which means it's a town without its own local government.

Fruto is about 14 miles (23 km) west-northwest of Willows. It sits 610 feet (186 meters) above sea level. You can find it along State Route 162.

Fruto's History

Fruto started in 1888. It was the end of the line for the Westside and Mendocino Railroad. This railroad was later bought by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Fruto became an important place for shipping goods. Farmers sent their fruit and wool from here.

The Southern Pacific Railroad had a depot (a train station), a machine shed, and a small yard in Fruto. There was also a turntable to turn trains around. The train track from Willows to Fruto was about 17 miles long. It mostly followed State Route 162. Most of this track was removed in 1951. A small part near Willows is still used today by the California Northern Railroad. It serves a fiberglass factory. Fruto also had its own post office from 1888 until 1953.

Fruto's Climate

Fruto has a type of weather called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. It's similar to the climate you might find around the Mediterranean Sea.
