That was 19 years after Fry's made the very first solid chocolate bar you could eat! Fry's Chocolate Cream is special because it was the first chocolate bar made for lots of people. It is also the oldest chocolate bar brand in the world!
This chocolate bar is called a "combination bar." This means it mixes chocolate with other tasty things. The original Fry's Chocolate Cream has a soft, plain fondant center. This center is covered in plain chocolate. There are also other flavors like Peppermint Cream, Orange Cream, Raspberry Cream, and Strawberry Cream.
In the 1960s, a model named George Lazenby helped advertise Fry's Chocolate Cream on TV in Britain. He became known as 'The Big Fry' man. These commercials were very popular. They even caught the eye of the people who made the James Bond movies!

The Story of Fry's Chocolate Cream
Fry's Chocolate Cream was first made in 1866. It came from an earlier chocolate called Fry's Cream Stick, which was made in 1853. This earlier chocolate might have been inspired by French chocolates. Other chocolate makers at the time sold similar "chocolats à la crème" with fondant. The Cream Stick was the first chocolate bar made in factories that many people could afford.
In 1875, Fry's Chocolate Cream got the shape it still has today. At one point, they made over half a million of these bars every single day! The foil wrapper and label were added in 1925. New flavors like Orange Cream and Peppermint Cream came out in 1934. Fry's Five Centre also came out that year.
During the Second World War, British bomber crews sometimes received Fry's Chocolate Creams before their missions.
In 2022, the way Fry's Chocolate Cream was made changed. The original recipe did not use milk, but now it includes skimmed milk powder.
Different Flavors and Brands
Today, there are five main types of Fry's Cream:
- Fry's Chocolate Cream
- Fry's Peppermint Cream
- Fry's Orange Cream (This flavor stopped being made in 2015 but came back in 2018!)
- Fry's Raspberry Cream
- Fry's Strawberry Cream (This flavor came back in 2020 for a short time)
Over the years, there were other flavors too:
- Fry's Five Centre: This bar had five different fruit centers. These included orange, raspberry, lime, strawberry, and pineapple. Sometimes it had other combinations like orange, coffee, vanilla, lime, and raspberry. An old advertisement from the 1950s even showed a blackcurrant flavor! This bar was made from 1934 to 1992. For a while in the 1960s, it was called Fruit Medley, but then they changed the name back.
- Fry's Pineapple Cream
In the mid-1990s, Fry's tried to update their brand with "Fry's Spirit." They had new flavors like:
- Fry's Spirit Berry Margarita
- Fry's Spirit Piña Colada
- Fry's Spirit Velvet Dream (which tasted like a cream liqueur)
Cadbury also made a solid milk chocolate bar called Five Boys using the Fry's name from 1902 to 1976. They also made milk and plain chocolate sandwich bars under the Fry's brand.
In 2021, Fry's started selling a hot chocolate powder that you can mix with milk.
The 'Big Fry' Man Commercials
In the 1960s, George Lazenby was a model who became famous as 'The Big Fry' man. He starred in TV commercials for Fry's Chocolate Cream. These commercials were very popular and were rivals to the Cadbury Milk Tray commercials, which featured the 'Milk Tray Man'.
A casting director for the James Bond movies, Dyson Lowell, saw Lazenby in the Fry's commercials. He thought Lazenby would be a good fit for the role of James Bond. Lazenby later played James Bond in the movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969.
Where Fry's Chocolate Was Made
The first Fry's chocolate bar was made in Bristol, England, in 1866. The Fry family had been making chocolate there since about 1761. In 1923, the Fry's chocolate factory (which was then part of Cadbury) moved to Somerdale Garden City, in Keynsham, England.
In 2010, a company called Kraft Foods took over Cadbury. Because of this, the Somerdale factory closed on March 31, 2011. The machines from the factory were sent to Warsaw, Poland. Later, Mondelez International bought Cadbury. Production then moved again, and the Warsaw factory became part of Lotte Wedel.
