Frytown is a small community in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own city government. It is also a census-designated place, a special area defined for gathering population data. Frytown is located about 10 miles southwest of Iowa City.
The name Frytown has been used since the 1800s. Even though the USGS once called it Williamstown, it is now officially known as Frytown on state maps. A nature park called Frytown Conservation Area is located nearby. It is about one mile northeast of Frytown and is a woodlands park managed by Johnson County.

History of Frytown
Frytown has a history that goes back many years. The community is named after some of its first families.
The Fry Family and Early Settlers
The cemetery on the east side of town has old grave markers. These markers show the names of the original Fry family members. They were immigrants who came to this area a long time ago. Some of these early family members include Samuel Preston Fry and his wife Fionna Melinda Grosscup. His father, Titus R Fry, and Jacob Fry are also buried there.
Another important family name in the Church of Christ graveyard is Yoder. These families helped to build the early community of Frytown.

The number of people living in Frytown has changed over the years. In 1925, the population of Frytown (which was also known as Williamstown) was 35 people.
