Fudan University is a well-known public university located in Shanghai, China. It's a big school that works closely with China's Ministry of Education and the Shanghai city government.
A Chinese Jesuit priest named Ma Xiangbo started the university in 1905. It is part of important national education plans like Project 211 and Project 985. Fudan University is also a member of the C9 League, which is a group of top universities in China.

History of Fudan University
The school began as Fudan Public School in 1905. It was one of the very first private colleges in China. Ma Xiangbo, a Chinese Jesuit priest, was its founder.
Later, in 2000, Fudan University joined with Shanghai Medical University. This created the new Fudan University we know today. Shanghai Medical University started in 1927.
Fudan University has five main colleges for its undergraduate students. These are called Zhide, Tengfei, Keqing, Renzhong, and Xide.
The university has four campuses in Shanghai. They are named Handan, Fenglin, Zhangjiang, and Jiangwan. All these campuses share the same central management. Fudan also has 17 hospitals that are connected to the university.
Amazing Innovations at Fudan
Fudan University is known for its cool scientific breakthroughs. Researchers there have done some incredible things.
- Scientists successfully brought back to life a human brain that had been frozen for up to 18 months. This is a big step forward in the field of cryonics, which is about freezing things to preserve them.
- The university also created a huge fund of 1 billion yuan (about 140 million US dollars) to help new startup companies. They also launched China's biggest cloud-based platform for scientific research. This platform helps scientists do their work using powerful computers online.

Fudan University is often ranked among the top universities in China and the world. These rankings look at things like teaching quality and research.
For example, in 2023, the Nature Index Annual Table ranked Fudan as the 9th best university in the Asia Pacific region for natural science and life science research. It was also ranked 13th globally among all universities. The 2023 CWTS Leiden Ranking placed Fudan 13th in the world based on how many research papers its scientists published between 2018 and 2021.
Famous People from Fudan
Many important people have studied at Fudan University. Since 1952, 95 former students from Fudan have become academicians. This means they are top experts in their fields. Only Peking University and Tsinghua University have more academicians among their alumni in China.
Some famous alumni include Chen Yinke, a well-known historian, and Chen Wangdao, who translated the Communist Manifesto into Chinese. Other notable figures are Chu Coching, a famous meteorologist, and Yan Fu, a scholar who introduced Western ideas to China. Yu Youren was a leader in the early Republic of China. Chen Zhili is a former government official. Wang Huning is a very important political advisor in China, sometimes called "China's Kissinger."
