The Museum's History
The Fuller Craft Museum exists thanks to a man named Myron Fuller. In August 1946, he set up a special fund. This fund was to create an art center focused on education.
Who Was Myron Fuller?
Myron Fuller was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. He was a geologist, studying rocks and the Earth. He was also a hydrologist, studying water. During his life, he became very wealthy. Mr. Fuller decided to use one million dollars of his money. He wanted to create this art museum and cultural center. He did this to honor his family. The museum was once called the Fuller Memorial Museum of Art School.
Museum Building and Nature
The museum building was designed by architects from Boston. Their names were J. Timothy Anderson & Associates. The building has tall ceilings and wide hallways. It features slate floors and natural wood beams. Many floor-to-ceiling windows let in lots of sunlight.
Art Inside and Out
Beautiful craft art is shown in the galleries inside. But you can also find sculptures outside! They are placed in the museum's courtyards and outdoor sculpture garden. The building's design blends with nature. This creates a unique feeling for visitors. You can easily move from inside to outside and back again. This design was inspired by Danish architects, Jorgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. They designed the famous Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Copenhagen.
Location and Community
The Fuller Craft Museum is located right next to D.W. Field Park in Brockton, Massachusetts. As mentioned before, the museum also partners with a local high school. They provide weaving and ceramics lessons for students with special needs.
