History of Fulton Tower
This old tower house was once owned by a powerful family known as the Homes. Later, another important family, the Turnbulls, took ownership. This happened through a marriage. In 1570, a woman named Margaret Hume, from the Homes family, was given the right to use the lands of Fulton. This was before she married William Turnbull. William was the son of Thomas Turnbull, who owned Bedrule.
What Fulton Tower Looks Like
Fulton Tower is built in a special shape called an L-plan castle. This means it looks like the letter 'L' from above.
Tower Shape and Size
The main part of the tower is shaped like a long rectangle. It has a round stair-tower sticking out from its east side. The tower measures about 22.75 feet (6.93 m) from northwest to southeast. It is about 30.5 feet (9.29 m) from northeast to southwest.
Remaining Parts of the Tower
Only two floors of the tower are still standing, and they are not complete. The southeast wall has fallen down. Most of the stair-tower is also gone. The other walls are built from rough stones. They are still about 18 feet (5.5 m) tall on average.
Special Features of the Tower
We can't find where the main entrance used to be. On the ground floor, there are two oval-shaped openings. These are called gunloops. They were used to fire guns out of the tower, facing northwest.
Inside, you can still see a fireplace in the southwest wall. On the floor above, there are parts of a window facing northeast. Across from this window, there is another fireplace. This fireplace even has a small storage space, called a locker, built into its side.
