Funyuns are a popular snack food that tastes like onion rings. They are made from cornmeal and shaped into rings, just like real fried onions. These crunchy snacks get their special flavor from a mix of salt and onion.
Funyuns were first introduced in the United States in 1969. They were created by a Frito-Lay employee named George Wade Bigner. Today, Funyuns are a product of Frito-Lay, which is part of the larger PepsiCo company. If you travel to Brazil, you might find a similar snack called "Cebolitos"!
The Story of Funyuns
Funyuns got their unique name from a professor named Jim Albright. He was a copywriter at the University of North Texas. The first name thought of for the snack was "OnYums." However, that name was already being used by another company. So, "Funyuns" was chosen instead!
When Funyuns first came out, their TV commercials used a fun song. It was a new version of a 1966 song called "I Love Onions." Over the years, people have even found creative ways to use Funyuns in cooking. Some recipes suggest using them instead of fried onions in green bean casserole. Others use crushed Funyuns as a crunchy coating for Thanksgiving turkey!
