Géza Gárdonyi, whose birth name was Géza Ziegler, was a famous Hungarian writer and journalist. He was born on August 3, 1863, and passed away on October 30, 1922. Géza Gárdonyi wrote many different kinds of books, but he was best known for his exciting historical novels. His most popular books include Eclipse of the Crescent Moon and Slave of the Huns.

Life of Géza Gárdonyi
Géza Gárdonyi was born in Agárdpuszta, which was part of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. His father worked as a machinist on a large estate in Western Hungary.
Géza went to a college for teachers and became a teacher. For several years, he also worked as a cantor for the Catholic faith.
Starting His Writing Career
Gárdonyi began his career as a writer in the mid-1880s. He started by writing for different magazines and newspapers. His first popular works were funny letters called "Göre Gábor." These letters made fun of life in the countryside. Later, he decided he didn't like these early works as much.
Around the year 1900, Géza Gárdonyi started writing about historical events. This led to a series of wonderful novels that became very famous.
Life in Eger
In 1897, Gárdonyi moved to the city of Eger in northern Hungary with his mother. He lived there for the rest of his life. He is also buried in Eger, and his tombstone has a special message: Csak a teste, which means "Only his body." The house where he lived and wrote most of his books is now a museum that people can visit.

Gárdonyi is famous for two main historical novels that are very popular in Hungary.
Eclipse of the Crescent Moon
Gárdonyi's most famous novel is Egri csillagok, which was published in 1899. The title means Stars of Eger. In English, it is known as Eclipse of the Crescent Moon.
This book tells the story of a famous siege that happened in the town of Eger in 1552. During this time, the Ottomans tried to conquer the town. In 2005, people in Hungary voted this book "the most popular novel of Hungary" on a TV show called Big Read (A Nagy Könyv).
Slave of the Huns
Some people believe that Gárdonyi's best book is A láthatatlan ember, published in 1901. The Hungarian title means The Invisible Man. In English, it was published as Slave of the Huns.
This exciting story takes place around the time of Attila the Hun, a famous leader.
Even though these two novels are very well known in Hungary, they were not widely translated into English and other European languages until the late 20th century.
