Life and Career of Gülriz Sururi
Gülriz Sururi was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on July 24, 1929. Her father, Lütfullah, started the first Turkish musical theater. Her mother, Suzan, was a leading opera singer.
Early Acting Days
Gülriz studied acting and singing at the Municipal Conservatoire of Istanbul. In 1942, she began her acting journey in the Children's Section of the City Theatre of Istanbul. She followed the advice of the famous theater director Muhsin Ertuğrul.
In 1955, she performed at the Muammer Karaca Theatre. Later, in 1960, Sururi moved to the Haldun Dormen Theatre.
Founding Her Own Theater
In 1962, Gülriz Sururi and Engin Cezzar started their own theater company. It was named after them. They even hosted the famous writer James Baldwin in Istanbul.
In 1966, the Turkish Women's Association honored her as "The Woman of the Year." She married Engin Cezzar on September 18, 1968.
Television and Later Years
In the 1990s, Gülriz Sururi hosted a popular cooking show called A La Luna. It was shown on the TRT channel for five years.
In 1998, the Ministry of Culture gave her the special title of state artist. She stopped acting after her play Söyleyeceklerim Var in 1999.
Gülriz Sururi passed away on December 31, 2018, due to digestive problems. Her foster daughter, Zeynep Miraç Özkartal, survived her. Her funeral was kept private, as she had wished.
