Haldun Taner (born March 16, 1915 – died May 7, 1986) was a famous Turkish writer. He was known for writing plays and short stories. He created many interesting characters and stories that made people think and laugh.

About Haldun Taner
His Early Life and Education
Haldun Taner was born in Istanbul on March 16, 1915. He went to a good school called Galatasaray High School and finished there in 1935.
After high school, he traveled to Germany. He studied politics and economics at the University of Heidelberg. But he had to come back to Turkey because he got sick.
Later, in 1950, he graduated from a university in Turkey. He studied German literature and language. He also went to the University of Vienna in Austria from 1955 to 1957. There, he learned about theater and philosophy.
His Amazing Writing Career
Haldun Taner was a very hardworking writer. He wrote many different things. He wrote funny stories, essays, newspaper articles, and travel notes. But he was most famous for his plays.
He won several important awards for his writing. These included the New York Herald Tribune Story Contest First Prize in 1954. He also won the Sait Faik Story Award in the same year.
One of his most popular plays is called Keşanlı Ali Destanı. This means Epopee of Ali of Keshan. His stories have been translated into many languages. These include German, French, English, and Russian.
Haldun Taner also helped create a literary magazine called Papirüs. He worked with other famous writers there.
Founding a Cabaret Theater
In 1967, Haldun Taner did something special. He teamed up with actors like Metin Akpınar and Zeki Alasya. Together, they started a theater group called Devekuşu Kabare. A cabaret is a type of entertainment with songs, comedy, and short plays.
He taught and worked with many actors and directors. He also became very important in Turkish literature. This was thanks to his essays and newspaper articles.
Haldun Taner passed away suddenly in Istanbul on May 7, 1986. He was buried in Küplüce Cemetery.
His Legacy
Haldun Taner is still remembered today.
- A theater in Istanbul is named after him. It is called the Kadıköy Haldun Taner Stage.
- In 2015, the International Organization of Turkic Culture honored him. They called 2015 the "Year of Haldun Taner."
