Günther Johannes Jauch (born July 13, 1956) is a famous German television host, producer, and journalist. He is best known for hosting Wer wird Millionär?, which is the German version of the popular game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

Television Career

Günther Jauch is known for his witty and funny style of hosting, which both informs and entertains his audience. He has won many awards for his work on German television.

Jauch also owns a production company called "i&u TV". The name stands for Information und Unterhaltung, which means "information and entertainment" in English. He is also known for being very generous, often donating the money he earns from advertisements to charity.

Early Career and Famous Shows

In the 1980s, Jauch started his career working for radio shows. In 1990, he began hosting a TV news show called stern TV [de] on the German channel RTL. He hosted this popular show for 21 years.

In 2011, Jauch started hosting a weekly political talk show on the German public TV network Das Erste. He also hosted the Four Hills Tournament, a major ski jumping event, from 2000 to 2006.

Together with his friend and fellow TV host Thomas Gottschalk, Jauch starred in the show Die 2 – Gottschalk und Jauch gegen alle. In 2015, Jauch announced that he would appear on TV less often. He wanted to focus on his most popular shows, like Wer wird Millionär?.

Personal Life and Charity Work

Jauch married his longtime partner, Thea Sihler, in 2006. The wedding took place at the Orangerie of Schloss Sanssouci, a beautiful palace in Potsdam. He is a member of the well-known Jauch family from Hamburg.

Jauch and his wife Thea have two daughters, Svenja and Kristin. They also adopted two more daughters, Katja and Masha.

Helping His Community

Jauch is known for living a private life, but he is very active in supporting his community. He has used his own money to help restore historic buildings in and around Potsdam, where he lives.

Some of the projects he has supported include:

  • Rebuilding the Fortunaportal (a grand gate) at the Potsdam City Palace.
  • Restoring the Belvedere on the Pfingstberg, a beautiful building with a great view.
  • Fixing up the Neptune Grotto in the gardens of the Sanssouci Palace.

He also supported the building of a new school in Potsdam. The prime minister of the state of Brandenburg, Matthias Platzeck, once called Jauch "a citizen every mayor could ever wish for."

Jauch's family has a long history of helping others. In the 19th and 20th centuries, his family set up soup kitchens and homes for people in need in Hamburg. Continuing this tradition, Jauch helped open a center for "Die Arche," a Christian charity that provides free meals and support for children.

Vineyard Owner

Jauch also continues a 200-year-old family tradition of making wine. In 2010, he bought his family's old vineyard, named Othegraven, to keep it from being sold to someone outside the family. The vineyard has been in his family since 1805.

The vineyard is part of the VDP, an association that recognizes Germany's best wine producers. In 2011, Jauch bought another nearby vineyard that also once belonged to his family. Since 2018, he has also worked with the supermarket chain Aldi to sell wines under his name.
