GPT-4o (which stands for GPT-4 omni) is a super-smart computer program made by a company called OpenAI. It's special because it can understand and create things using many different ways, like speaking, seeing, and writing. It also works in lots of different languages. OpenAI's technology leader, Mira Murati, showed it off for the first time on May 13, 2024, and it was released that same day.
One of the coolest things about GPT-4o is that it's free for everyone to use! If other computer programs want to use GPT-4o's brain, they can connect to its system (called an API). This connection is twice as fast and costs half as much as the older version, GPT-4 Turbo.
What GPT-4o Can Do
GPT-4o is really good at understanding and working with voices, many languages, and even images. It has set new records for how well a computer can understand spoken words and translate between languages. In a big test called MMLU (Massive Multitask Language Understanding), GPT-4o scored 88.7, which is even better than GPT-4's score of 86.5.
This amazing program can work with over 50 different languages. This means it can help almost everyone in the world, as these languages are spoken by more than 97% of people! During the live show, Mira Murati showed how well it works by speaking Italian to the program and having it translate back and forth between English and Italian.
GPT-4o is currently considered the top computer model in a special ranking system called the LMSYS Elo Arena Benchmarks. This ranking is done by the University of California, Berkeley.
How GPT-4o Started
Before it was officially announced, GPT-4o was secretly tested on a platform called LMSYS. It appeared as three different mystery programs: gpt2-chatbot, im-a-good-gpt2-chatbot, and im-also-a-good-gpt2-chatbot. People wondered who made these new, smart programs. Then, on May 7, 2024, Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, told everyone that OpenAI was behind these secret models all along!
