Gaara of the Desert (我愛羅) is a popular character from the Naruto manga and anime series. He was created by Masashi Kishimoto. Gaara starts as a tough opponent but later becomes a hero.
He is a powerful shinobi from a village called Sunagakure. Gaara is also the son of the Fourth Kazekage, who was the leader of Sunagakure.
Gaara was designed to be a contrast to the main character, Naruto Uzumaki. Both characters had similar difficult beginnings. However, they grew up to have very different personalities.
Fans of Naruto really like Gaara. He often ranks high in popularity polls. Many items like plush toys, key chains, and action figures have been made of him.
How Gaara Was Created
The creator of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, made Gaara to be a "foil" for Naruto Uzumaki. This means Gaara was meant to show how different Naruto could have become. Both characters had a tough start in life. They were both treated badly by others because they held a powerful beast inside them.
Kishimoto really liked writing Gaara's story, especially in the first part of Naruto. He even changed his drawings to show Gaara's feelings better. Gaara was almost named Kotarou Fuuma, but Kishimoto's editor suggested the name Gaara instead. Kishimoto felt "Gaara" fit the character better because he uses sand in his fighting style.
Gaara's first outfit, and those of his siblings, were hard for Kishimoto to draw every week. So, he gave them simpler clothes later on. Gaara's new outfit had a cool upright collar.
In the Japanese version of the Naruto anime, Akira Ishida is the voice of Gaara. In the English version, Liam O'Brien voices him.
