After high school, Gabe played college basketball for the University of California, Santa Barbara. He played there from 2014 to 2018. During his time in college, he scored about 12.8 points per game. In his final year, he was recognized as one of the best players in his college league.
Gabe's Basketball Journey
Starting with the Stockton Kings (2018–2020)
After college, Gabe tried out for the Sacramento Kings. Even though no team picked him in the 2018 NBA draft, he still got a contract with Sacramento. A few days later, he joined the Stockton Kings. This team is part of the NBA G League, which is like a development league for the NBA.
In his first season with the Stockton Kings, he played 24 games. He averaged 8.8 points in about 18 minutes per game. In his second season, he really improved! He averaged 23.4 points per game. He also shot very well from the field and from the three-point line.
Playing for the Miami Heat (2020–2023)
On January 8, 2020, the Miami Heat signed Gabe to a special contract called a two-way contract. This type of contract allows a player to play for both an NBA team and its G League team. Gabe made his first NBA appearance on January 29.
He continued to play well in the G League. In June 2020, the NBA G League gave him the Most Improved Player award. This award goes to the player who shows the most progress in their game.
The Miami Heat had a great season in 2020 and reached the 2020 NBA Finals. However, they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.
In August 2021, Gabe signed a regular contract with the Heat. This meant he was a full-time NBA player.
During the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, Gabe had an amazing game. He scored 29 points against the Boston Celtics, which was his highest score in a playoff game. This helped the Heat take a big lead in the series. The Heat won that series and made it to the 2023 NBA Finals again.
In Game 2 of the 2023 NBA Finals, Gabe scored 23 points. This helped the Heat win that game against the Denver Nuggets. Even though Gabe played well, the Heat lost the series in five games.
