Early Life and Education
Gabriel Urralburu was born in 1950 in a town called Ezkároz in the region of Navarre, Spain. He completed his high school education in La Estella. Later, he moved to Pamplona to continue his studies.
In Pamplona, he studied philosophy, literature, and theology. He attended the Higher Center for Theological Studies. He earned a degree in Theological and Moral Sciences.
Political Career
Joining the Socialist Party
In 1973, Gabriel Urralburu became involved in politics. He helped form the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). A year later, he also helped start the Socialist Federation of Navarre.
By 1975, he was elected as the Secretary of Political Relations for the Socialist Association of Navarre. He also became a member of the PSOE's Federal Committee.
Early Public Service
In 1976, he became a priest of the Order of Missionaries of the Divine Word. In the same year, he helped write an important document for the Democratic Convergence. This group worked to bring democracy to Spain after the dictatorship ended.
One of his first public roles was representing Navarre. He attended a special meeting of Basque Parliamentarians in Gernika on June 16, 1977.
Serving in Parliament
Gabriel Urralburu was elected to the Congress of Deputies in 1977. He was re-elected in 1979. The Congress of Deputies is like the main parliament in Spain.
Also in 1979, he became a parliamentary representative for Pamplona. He was re-elected to this role in 1983, 1987, and 1991. During this time, he was a spokesperson for the Socialist Parliamentary Group. He also served as secretary of the Basque Parliamentary Council.
In 1982, he left the Congress of Deputies to join the Navarre Parliament. He also worked on a special committee that discussed an agreement between Navarre and the Spanish government. In the same year, he was chosen as the Secretary General of the Socialist Party of Navarre (PSN).
In 1984, Gabriel Urralburu became the President of Navarre. This happened because his party had the most seats in the regional parliament. He officially took office on May 5, 1984.
He was re-elected to the Navarre Parliament in 1985. He was then re-appointed as President of Navarre in 1987. During his time as president, he believed Navarre should remain separate from the Basque Autonomous Community. He served as president until 1991. The Navarrese People's Union (UPN) party, led by Juan Cruz Alli, then took power.
Later Years
In 1994, Gabriel Urralburu stepped down from his role as Secretary General of the PSN. After leaving politics, he lived in Pamplona. He later began studying law. As of 2013, he was working as a lawyer in Madrid.
