Gabriella Tarantello facts for kids
Gabriella Tarantello (born October 15, 1958) is a brilliant Italian mathematician. She specializes in advanced math topics like partial differential equations, differential geometry, and gauge theory. She teaches as a professor in the math department at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy.
Her Journey in Math
Gabriella Tarantello was born in a town called Pratola Peligna in Italy. She began her university studies at the University of L'Aquila. She earned her first degree there in 1982.
After that, she traveled to the United States for more advanced studies. She attended the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. She received her master's degree in 1984. Then, she completed her Ph.D. in 1986. A Ph.D. is the highest university degree you can get. Her main advisor for her Ph.D. was a famous mathematician named Louis Nirenberg.
After finishing her Ph.D., she did special research at the Institute for Advanced Study. She also taught for a short time at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1989, she joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University.
She returned to Italy in 1993 to teach at Tor Vergata. She became a full professor at the University of Basilicata in 1994. Then, in 1995, she came back to the University of Rome Tor Vergata as a full professor.
Books She Wrote
Gabriella Tarantello has written important math books. One of her books is called Selfdual Gauge Field Vortices: An Analytical Approach. She also co-authored another book with other mathematicians. It is titled Geometric Analysis and PDEs. These books are used by students and researchers in mathematics.
Awards and Recognition
In 2014, Gabriella Tarantello received a special award. It was the Lucio & Wanda Amerio Gold Medal Prize
. This award is given by the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere, an important Italian academy. In 2020, she became a member of the Academia Europaea. This is a group of top scientists and scholars from across Europe.
