Early Life and Education
Gabrielle Carteris was born in Scottsdale, Arizona. She has a twin brother named James. Her father's family was from Greece, and her mother is Jewish. Her parents separated when she was a baby.
After the separation, Gabrielle's mother moved with her children to San Francisco, California. There, her mother opened a children's clothing store. Gabrielle went to Redwood High School in Larkspur, California. After high school, she attended Sarah Lawrence College in New York.
Acting Career
Beverly Hills, 90210
After college, Carteris began her acting career. She often played characters who were much younger than she was. Her most famous role came in 1990 when she was cast as Andrea Zuckerman in Beverly Hills, 90210.
Andrea was the smart editor of the school newspaper. Although the character was a 15-year-old high school student, Carteris was actually 29 years old when the show started. She was the oldest cast member playing a teenager. She kept her real age a secret to get the part. Carteris was a main character on the show for five years, leaving in 1995.
After 90210
After leaving Beverly Hills, 90210, Carteris hosted her own TV talk show called Gabrielle. The show ran for one season. She continued to work as an actress in TV shows, movies, and as a voice actor for cartoons and video games.
She has appeared in many TV shows, including Touched by an Angel, Criminal Minds, and NCIS. She also did voice work for animated shows like King of the Hill and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
In 2019, she joined her old castmates for a new show called BH90210. In this series, she played both her classic character, Andrea Zuckerman, and a version of herself.
Leading an Actors' Union
In 2012, Carteris became the executive vice president of SAG-AFTRA. This union was formed when two older unions, the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), joined together.
When the union's president, Ken Howard, passed away in 2016, Carteris became the acting president. A few weeks later, on April 9, 2016, she was officially elected president. She was re-elected by the union's members in 2017 and 2019.
As president, Carteris worked to protect actors and other members of the union. She did not run for re-election in 2021. Instead, she supported Fran Drescher, who became the next president.
Personal Life
While working on Beverly Hills, 90210, Carteris met a stockbroker named Charles Isaacs. They got married on May 3, 1992. Together, they have two daughters.
