Growing up in Manhasset, New York, Ken was very tall, about 6 feet 6 inches. This earned him the nickname "Stork" in high school. In 1961, the local newspapers called him "The White Shadow." This was because he was the only white player starting on his high school basketball team.

Ken was a great student and a member of the National Honor Society. He chose to focus on his studies instead of accepting basketball scholarships. He graduated from Amherst College in 1966, where he was the captain of the basketball team. He also sang in an a cappella group called The Zumbyes. He later studied at Yale School of Drama.
