Alan Rosenberg (born October 4, 1950) is an American actor. He is known for playing Eli Levinson in the TV shows Civil Wars and L.A. Law. From 2005 to 2009, Rosenberg was the president of the Screen Actors Guild. This group is a union for actors in movies and TV shows.

Alan Rosenberg's Early Life and School
Alan Rosenberg was born on October 4, 1950, in Passaic, New Jersey. He grew up there. His family followed Conservative Judaism.
His older brother, Mark, was involved in political activities in the 1960s. Later, Mark became a film producer. Alan's cousin, Donald Fagen, is a musician and songwriter. Donald helped start the music group Steely Dan.
After finishing college in 1972 at Case Western Reserve University, Alan wanted to go to drama school. He applied to the Yale School of Drama. He left Yale during his second year. While there, his good friend was the famous actress Meryl Streep.
Alan Rosenberg's Acting Career
Alan Rosenberg has had many roles in movies and TV shows. In 1979, he was in the movie The Wanderers. He also played Ira Woodbine in the TV show Cybill. Later, he was Alvin Masterson in the legal drama The Guardian.
He also used his voice for acting. He was the voice of the bounty hunter Boba Fett in a radio version of The Empire Strikes Back. Alan was also in the movie Stewardess School (1986) and Not for Publication (1984).
In 1991, he appeared in the TV movie The Boys. In 1995, he was nominated for an Emmy Award. This was for a guest role in the popular medical show ER. He played Shelly Berger in The Temptations miniseries in 1998.
In 1999, he started a role as Stuart Brickman on Chicago Hope. He played a hospital legal counsel. He became a regular cast member in the show's final season.
Alan has also acted on stage. He was in Broadway plays like What's Wrong With This Picture and Lost In Yonkers. He also performed in off-Broadway shows.
Leading the Screen Actors Guild
On September 23, 2005, Alan Rosenberg was chosen as the 24th president of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). This is a big union for actors. He took over from Melissa Gilbert. She had been president since 2001. Alan won the election with many votes from the Guild's members.
While he was president, he continued acting. In 2005, he was in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. He acted alongside his wife at the time, Marg Helgenberger. In 2006, he played Bruce Steinerman in the TV show House M.D..
He also hosted a TV show called Life: Part 2. This show started in 2007. It had discussions about issues that older adults face as they get older.
More recently, Alan has appeared in other TV shows. In 2015, he was Dr. William Golliher in Bosch. In 2016, he played William Sutter in Suits. From 2016 to 2017, he had a role as Professor Youens in Shameless. He played a college professor who helped a character named Lip Gallagher.
Alan Rosenberg's Personal Life
Alan Rosenberg was married to actress Robin Bartlett from 1976 to 1984.
He later met Marg Helgenberger in 1984. They became friends and started dating in 1986. They got married in 1989. They have one son, Hugh Howard Rosenberg, who was born in 1990. They separated in 2008 and their divorce was final in 2010.
Marg Helgenberger's mother had breast cancer. Because of this, Alan and Marg became involved in helping fight the disease. Since 1999, they have hosted an event called Marg and Alan's Celebrity Weekend every year in Omaha, Nebraska. This event helps raise money to fight breast cancer.
