Meet the Characters
Main Characters
- Ickis (voiced by Charlie Adler) – He is a small, dark red monster. People often mistake him for a rabbit because of his big ears. Ickis is the son of Slickis, a very famous scarer. He can grow very big to scare people. Ickis often causes trouble for his friends because he breaks rules. He also almost reveals the monster world to humans many times!
- Oblina (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) – She is a black-and-white striped monster. She looks like an upside-down candy cane. Oblina comes from a rich monster family. Her teacher, The Gromble, thinks she is his best student. She can pull out her own organs to scare humans. Oblina is also good at changing her shape into scary forms. She can even give humans nightmares by tickling their brains!
- Krumm (voiced by David Eccles) – He is a light orange, hairy monster. His eyeballs are not attached to his body. He usually carries them in his hands. If he needs both hands, he can hold them in his mouth. When he sleeps, he keeps his eyes in a glass of water. Krumm's best scare tool is his super stinky armpit smell. He often loses his eyeballs, which is a funny part of the show.
- The Gromble (voiced by Gregg Berger) – He is a green-blue monster with four feet. He wears a red high-heeled shoe on each foot. The Gromble is the headmaster of the monster school. He is known for his quick temper and strict punishments. He teaches young monsters and watches their scaring activities. He can also hear the Pool of Elders, which is the source of all monster fears.
- The Snorch (voiced by David Eccles) – He is the school's disciplinarian. He works for The Gromble. The Snorch mostly makes sounds instead of talking. He has three scary chambers for punishment. His main punishment is singing opera, which he is very bad at!
- Zimbo (voiced by Tim Curry) – This monster looks like a bee with one leg. He has a human-like face with green hair. Zimbo is The Gromble's assistant. He is usually seen on The Snorch's head.
- Simon the Monster Hunter (voiced by Jim Belushi) – He is the main human enemy in the show. Simon wears a thick jacket and glasses. He wants to prove that monsters exist and get rid of them. He once saved Ickis from other hunters. But he still wants to expose monsters to the human world.
- Bradley (voiced by Brett Alexander) – He is a human friend of the monsters. Bradley first meets Ickis in the second episode and they become friends. He helps Ickis and the other monsters. Bradley helps keep the monster world a secret from humans.
Other Characters
- Slickis (voiced by Billy Vera) – He is Ickis's father. Slickis was one of The Gromble's favorite students.
- Horvak (voiced by David Eccles) – He is Krumm's father. He lost one of his eyes in a battle. He now works as a mold farmer.
- Mama Gromble (voiced by Andrea Martin) – She is The Gromble's mother.
- Sublima (voiced by Charlie Adler) – She is Oblina's mother. Sublima comes from a rich family. She doesn't like Oblina scaring and wanted her to quit school.
- Skeetch (voiced by Marvin Kaplan) – He is Oblina's father. Unlike her mother, Skeetch supports Oblina's dream to be a scarer.
- Nicky (voiced by Steven Hartman) – He is a 10-year-old boy who becomes friends with Ickis.
How the Show Was Made
Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was created by Gábor Csupó and Peter Gaffney. It was the third animated series from Csupó's company, Klasky Csupo. This company also made Rugrats. Before its final name, the show was called Monsters or Real Monsters.
Gábor Csupó was inspired to make a show about monsters because his own children loved them. He also knew Nickelodeon wanted shows about non-human characters. Csupó drew some monster sketches and Nickelodeon liked the idea. He wanted the monsters to be "silly and not too skillful."
The show's character design was partly inspired by the 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine. The character Gromble looks a bit like the Blue Meanie characters from that movie. The city dump where the monsters live was designed to look like a "film noir" movie. It was similar to films like Blade Runner (1982).
The characters from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters also appeared in a 1999 Rugrats episode called "Ghost Story".

The first episode of Aaahh!!! Real Monsters won awards for film animation. It won at the Houston Film Festival and the Ottawa Film Festival. The series was also nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1995. It was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Animation.
