The Gadjalivia People
The Gadjalivia were one of many unique Aboriginal groups who lived in Australia for thousands of years. They had their own culture, traditions, and way of life in the beautiful region of Arnhem Land.
Where They Lived
The Gadjalivia people lived inland, west of the Blyth River. Their traditional lands covered about 520 square kilometers (200 square miles). This area was their home, where they hunted, gathered food, and lived according to their customs.
Their Language
The Gadjalivia people spoke their own language, which was closely related to the Burarra language. A language expert named Arthur Capell studied it and found it was like a special version, or dialect, of Burarra.
History of the Gadjalivia
Over time, the number of Gadjalivia people became very small. The remaining members of the group, who lived near the Csdell River, are believed to have joined with the Nagara group. This means their distinct culture and identity became part of the Nagara people.
