Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Nagara (also called Nakara) are an Indigenous Australian people. They come from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. They are one of the many different groups of Aboriginal people who have lived in Australia for thousands of years.

Where the Nagara People Lived

The Nagara people lived in a special part of Australia called Arnhem Land. Their traditional lands covered about 200 square miles (518 square kilometers). This area was around a place called Boucaut Bay. It also stretched southwest from the Blyth River. Their land went inland as far as the Tomkinson River and its mouth. These rivers and bays were very important for their way of life.

Nagara History and Joining Tribes

In more recent times, the Nagara people welcomed members of another group called the Gadjalivia. The Gadjalivia people faced many challenges, and their numbers became very small. To survive and keep their culture strong, the remaining Gadjalivia joined with the Nagara. Because of this, the Nagara people also took care of the traditional lands that once belonged to the Gadjalivia tribe. This shows how different Indigenous groups sometimes came together to help each other.
