Gaius Valerius Pudens facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gaius Valerius Pudens was an important official in the Roman Empire. He was a Roman Senator, which was a powerful job in ancient Rome. He also served as a consul, one of the highest political positions.

Valerius Pudens held several important jobs for the Roman emperors in the late 100s and early 200s AD. We know about his career mostly from old stone carvings and writings found in the places he governed. He was born in a town called Cuicul, which is now Djémila in modern-day Algeria.

Early Career and Important Roles

Valerius Pudens started his public service as a governor. His first known role was leading the Roman province of Pannonia Inferior in April 193 AD. This was a region in what is now Hungary.

Soon after, he became a consul, either in late 193 AD or in 194 AD. This was a very high honor. After his time as consul, he was appointed as the governor of Germania Inferior. This was another Roman province, located in what is now parts of Germany and the Netherlands. He served there sometime between 197 AD and 200 AD.

Governing Roman Britain

After his time in Lower Germany, Valerius Pudens was given an even bigger job. He became the governor of Roman Britain. This was a very important and sometimes challenging province for Rome.

An old stone inscription found at Bainbridge fort in Britain tells us about his time there. It says that new army barracks were built under his leadership around 205 AD. This building project might have been needed because of some local unrest or small rebellions by a group called the Brigantes.

Later Life in Africa

The last we hear of Valerius Pudens is when he was serving as a proconsul in the Roman province of Africa. This was a large and wealthy region in North Africa. He was there around 211 AD or 212 AD.

During his time in Africa, a famous writer named Tertullian wrote about him. Tertullian mentioned that Valerius Pudens handled a legal case in a fair way. He made sure that accusations were properly presented and not just based on unfair complaints.
