Gajender Singh Bisht (born July 1, 1972 – died November 28, 2008) was a very brave commando from India's NSG. He was a Havildar, which is like a sergeant in the army. He sadly lost his life while fighting terrorists during the 2008 Mumbai attacks. Because of his amazing courage, he was given the Ashoka Chakra. This is India's highest award for bravery during peacetime. The President of India gave him this honor on January 26, 2009, during India's 60th Republic Day.

Who Was Gajender Singh Bisht?
Gajender Singh Bisht was a hero who served in the Indian Army. He was part of a special group called the National Security Guard (NSG). These are highly trained soldiers who protect India from serious threats.
Early Life and School Days
Gajender Singh grew up in Ganeshpur, a town in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. As a young boy, he went to Janata Inter College in Naya Gaon. His teachers remembered him as a very disciplined student.
He loved to take part in all school activities. This included both sports and cultural events. He was especially interested in boxing, which shows he was strong and determined from a young age.
A Brave Mission: Operation Black Tornado
Gajender Singh was a key member of the National Security Guard’s 51 Special Action Group. This team was called into action during the terrible 2008 Mumbai attacks. Their mission was named "Operation Black Tornado."
What Happened at Nariman House?
During Operation Black Tornado, Gajender Singh and his team were sent to Nariman House. This was one of the places where terrorists were holding people hostage. The commandos used a special technique called fast-roping to get onto the roof of the building.
Gajender Singh was leading one of the teams that went inside. As they entered, the terrorists started shooting at them very intensely. The commandos bravely fired back, trying to take control of the situation. The terrorists also threw many grenades at them.
At this point, Gajender Singh and his team could have pulled back to safety. But he knew they had to keep moving forward to save the hostages. He chose to push ahead, even when a grenade was thrown near him. He kept going, creating a path for the other commandos. Even though he was hit by many bullets, he continued to advance. He sadly died from his injuries, but his bravery allowed his team to get into a strong position and fight the terrorists effectively.
Honoring a Hero
Gajender Singh Bisht showed incredible courage and selflessness. He put his life on the line to protect others. For his ultimate sacrifice and bravery, he was awarded the Ashoka Chakra. This is the highest peacetime military award in India. It is given for the most outstanding bravery, courage, and self-sacrifice away from the battlefield.
