Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Galali or Kalali were an Indigenous Australian people. They lived in the state of Queensland, Australia. They are an important part of Australia's history.

Galali Language and Communication

The Galali people spoke their own language, called Garlali. Sadly, this language is now extinct. This means no one speaks it as their everyday language anymore. However, some parts of the language were recorded by people like Nils Holmer, Maryalyce McDonald, and Stephen Wurm. This helps us learn about it.

The Galali also spoke two other languages. These were the Bulloo River language and the Wilson River language. They shared these languages with other nearby Indigenous groups.

Galali Traditional Lands

The Galali people lived on a large area of land. A researcher named Norman Tindale estimated their traditional territory was about 4,800 square miles (12,000 km2) (which is about 12,432 square kilometers).

Their land stretched west from Eulo to Thargomindah. It also included the Bulloo River and went upstream to Norley. To the south, their land reached places like Clyde, Orient, and Currawinya.

Today, many descendants of the Kalali speakers live in different places. You can find them in Brisbane, Cherbourg (which was once an Aboriginal Mission), and smaller towns. These towns include Bourke, Thargomindah, Cunnamulla, and Charleville in New South Wales and Queensland.

Other Names for the Galali

The Galali people have been known by several different names over time. These names include:

  • Galali
  • Kullali
  • Kullally
  • Kalili (this might be a spelling mistake)

Sometimes, you might see their name spelled as Garlali or Galarli. However, experts like Breen (in 2007) suggest that the "rl" sound in these spellings might not be important. So, it's usually better to stick to the simpler spellings.
