You could find it about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of a town called Camptonville. Galena Hill was quite high up, at an elevation of 2,815 feet (858 meters). This former settlement still appeared on maps as late as 1895.

The name "Galena Hill" comes from a group of miners. These miners were from a town called Galena, Illinois. In 1852, they discovered gold in this area. Because of their discovery, the place was named after their hometown.
