The Story of Gallery MOMO
Gallery MOMO was started in Johannesburg in 2002. A South African art expert named Monna Mokoena created it. Later, in 2015, the gallery opened a second location in Cape Town.
In 2017, Gallery MOMO was known as South Africa's only art gallery owned by a Black person. It also helped South Africa show its art again at the Venice Biennial. This is a very important art event in Italy. In 2018, a magazine called 'CapeTown Etc.' said Gallery MOMO was one of the top five art places to visit in Cape Town.
Awesome Art Shows
Since it opened, Gallery MOMO has had many exciting art shows. They often show new art from both South African and international artists. By 2006, the Johannesburg gallery was already famous. It was known for finding new and talented artists from Africa and other countries.
Some of the first shows included art by the South African painter, Johannes Phokela. His exhibition in 2003 was called 'The Age of Enlightenment'. In the 2010s, the gallery continued to host shows. These featured artists like the South African sculptor, Mary Sibande. Other artists included Ransome Stanley from Germany and Ayana V. Jackson, a photographer from the U.S.
Gallery MOMO also takes part in big art events around the world. These include the Joburg Art Fair and the Cape Town Art Fair. They also attend the Start Art Fair in London.
