Where is Galloway Located?
You can find this community at a specific crossroads. It's where Nelson Road and S. Meridian Road meet. S. Meridian Road is also known as NE Gratiot County Line Road, which helps you remember it's right on the county line!
History of Galloway's Post Office
Galloway once had its very own post office, which is a cool part of its history.
First Post Office Opening
The first post office in Galloway opened a long time ago, on February 16, 1883. It was located in Gratiot County. The very first person in charge of this post office, called the postmaster, was a man named Richard Galloway. Maybe the community was named after him!
Post Office Reopening
This first post office didn't stay open for very long. It closed down on January 19, 1885. But that wasn't the end of mail service for Galloway! The post office was opened again a few years later, on July 16, 1889.
The new post office was set up in Lafayette Township. The new postmaster was Andrew Schurr. Interestingly, when Mr. Schurr moved his home across the county line into Lakefield Township, the post office moved with him!
Final Closure
Eventually, the Galloway post office closed for good. This happened on October 31, 1902. Even though it doesn't have a post office anymore, Galloway remains a small, unique community in Michigan.
