Gamewell officially became a town on June 23, 1981. This means it gained its own local government.

Gamewell is located in the southwestern part of Caldwell County. The city of Lenoir, which is the county seat, borders Gamewell to the northeast.

U.S. Route 64 is a main road that goes through the town. This road leads northeast into Lenoir and southwest about 10 miles (16 km) to Morganton.

The town covers a total area of about 8.11 square miles (21.0 km2), all of which is land. Gamewell is situated in the valley of Lower Creek. This creek flows southwest and is a branch of the Catawba River.
