Where is Ganado Located?
Ganado is found in Jackson County, Texas. It is about 35 miles northeast of Victoria.
The city covers an area of about 1.2 square miles (3.03 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The number of people living in Ganado has changed over the years.
- In 1910, there were 558 people.
- By 1950, the population grew to 1,258.
- In 2000, there were 1,915 people.

The people in Ganado come from many different backgrounds. In 2020, about 55% of the people were of Hispanic or Latino heritage. Many other residents were White, Black, Native American, or Asian.
A Look at Ganado's History
Early Days and Naming the Town
Ganado started as a ranching community. Early settlers lived near Mustang Creek. They traveled to places like Texana and Victoria for their supplies.
The area was first called Mustang Settlement. This name came from the nearby Mustang Creek. Ranching was very important, and cattle were often taken to Louisiana or Kansas City to be sold.
In 1882, the railroad came to the area. A railroad official saw a large group of cattle from his train. He decided to call the place Ganado, which means "cattle" in Spanish.
Growth and Development
In 1891, people from Scandinavia bought land and started farming. Later, in the 1880s and 1890s, immigrants from Germany and Bohemia also moved to Ganado.
Jim McFarland opened a general store in town. After he passed away, Thomas Babcock bought the store. Babcock was also the town's first postmaster. He opened the first home and the first cotton gin in Ganado.
In 1891, T. N. Mauritz opened the first bank. By 1909, Ganado had sixty businesses. The city grew very quickly after the railroad arrived. New homes, hotels, and shops appeared fast. Ganado officially became a city in 1909.
Modern Times
By 1914, Ganado was a busy town with a rice mill and storage buildings. It had about 750 citizens, a school, and a weekly newspaper. By 1937, Main Street was paved, and water lines were put in.
In 1957, the Little School of the 400 program started in Ganado. This program helped Spanish-speaking children learn 400 basic English words. This helped them succeed in school. The program became very successful and was later used by the state of Texas. It even helped lead to the national Head Start Program.
In 1963, the city approved money for a new city hall and fire truck. The new city hall opened in 1964. Many families who first settled in Ganado still live there today.

Schools in Ganado
Ganado is part of the Ganado Independent School District. Students attend Ganado High School, where the sports teams are called the Indians.

Famous People from Ganado
- Patrick Flores: He was an Archbishop of San Antonio from 1979 to 2004.
- William Neff Patman: He was a U.S. Representative for Texas from 1981 to 1985. He later lived in Ganado and worked as the city's attorney.
- Blake Schlueter: A football player who was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2009. He played for the Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, and Atlanta Falcons. He graduated from Ganado High School in 2005.
