Gander Lake is a large and important lake located in the central part of Newfoundland, a province in Canada. It is the third-largest lake on the island of Newfoundland.

This long lake stretches for about 56 km (35 mi) (35 miles) and is several kilometers wide. It runs mostly from northwest to southeast. The town of Gander is found on its northern shore. Other towns, Appleton and Glenwood, are located at the western end of the lake. These towns are right on the banks of the Gander River, which flows from the lake.

Gander Lake is very deep in some places, reaching depths of up to 351 m (1,152 ft) (1,152 feet). This makes it a significant body of water. It also serves as the main source of drinking water for the towns of Gander, Appleton, and Glenwood.

Exploring Gander Lake: Access and Activities

Gander Lake offers many ways for people to enjoy its waters and shores. There are several spots around the lake that are popular for outdoor activities.

Boating and Fishing Spots

Near the southeastern end of the lake, about 12 km (7.5 mi) (7.5 miles) from Gander, you'll find a small, man-made harbor. This spot is known as "Little Harbour." It has a concrete boat launch, making it easy to put boats into the water. There's also a fire pit area, perfect for day trips and picnics.

While camping right at the boat launch is generally not allowed, there are other great places nearby. Boaters can easily reach many pebble and sand beaches along the lake's edges. These beaches are excellent for setting up a tent and enjoying the outdoors. Some well-known areas for boaters and campers include "Fifteen Mile Brook," "Hunt's Cove," "Southwest," "Gander River," and "Denty's Pit." These spots are perfect for exploring the lake's natural beauty.
