A Look Back: Gandy's Story

Gandy has an interesting history. It was actually the very first "county seat" for Logan County. A county seat is like the main town where the government offices are located.

How Gandy Became the County Seat

In 1885, people voted to create the town of Gandy and make it the county seat. The village was named after an early settler, Jim Gandy. He agreed to give the land for the town if it was named after him.

Changes Over Time

For a while, Gandy was the biggest town in Logan County. But things changed in 1913. A new train line, called a "spur line," was built by the Union Pacific railroad. This line went north of Gandy and ended at a new town called Stapleton. Because the train didn't come through Gandy, Stapleton started to grow bigger.

In 1929, another election was held. This time, the people voted to move the county seat from Gandy to Stapleton.
