Ganghwa Island is a cool island located at the start of the Han River in South Korea. It's on the country's west coast. A narrow water channel separates Ganghwa Island from Gimpo on the mainland, and two bridges connect them. The main part of the Han River separates the island from Kaesong in North Korea.
About 65,500 people call Ganghwa Island home. The island is about 302.4 square kilometers (116.8 square miles) in size. It makes up most of Ganghwa County, which is part of the Incheon area. About half of the island's people live in Ganghwa-eup, a town in the northeastern part of the island. The highest point on the island is Mani-san, which is 469 meters (1,539 feet) above sea level. The island is 28 kilometers (17 miles) long and 22 kilometers (14 miles) wide. It is the 4th largest island in South Korea.
Historically, Ganghwa Island is important because it was attacked a few times. These attacks happened when Korea was just starting to open up to the rest of the world. The French attacked in 1866. The United States attacked in 1871. And the Japanese attacked in 1875.
Island Climate
Ganghwa Island has a climate with four clear seasons. Summers are warm and wet, especially in July and August, when most of the rain falls. Winters are cold and dry, with temperatures often below freezing. Spring and autumn are usually mild and pleasant. The island gets a good amount of sunshine throughout the year.
