Discovering Garfield, Kentucky

Garfield is a quiet community located in the state of Kentucky. It's a place with a bit of history, even though it's not a big city.

A Look at Garfield's History

Garfield has an interesting past. A post office was first set up here in 1880. It was named after James A. Garfield, who was a candidate for president at the time and later became president of the United States.

Before that, there was another post office in the area from 1862 to 1866. It was known as Prince of Wales, Kentucky. The person in charge of that post office was Hopkins D. Wales.

Long ago, Garfield was a busy spot. It had places where people could mine for asphalt, which is used to make roads. There was also an inn where travelers could stay. Churches were part of the community, and it was a stop for stagecoaches.

A very famous person, Abraham Lincoln, even stayed at the inn here when he was a child in 1816. His family was moving to Indiana at the time.

Where is Garfield Located?

Garfield is easy to find because it sits right where two important roads meet. These roads are U.S. Highway 60 and Kentucky Route 86. This makes it a recognizable spot on the map in Breckinridge County.
