Main ingredients Currants, biscuits

The Garibaldi biscuit is a tasty snack from the United Kingdom. It's made of currants (a type of small dried grape) pressed between two thin, flat pieces of biscuit dough. Think of it like a sweet fruit sandwich!

People in Britain have loved these biscuits for over 150 years. They are often eaten with tea or coffee. Sometimes, people even like to dunk them into their hot drinks. You can find similar biscuits in other countries too. In Australia, they are called "Full O'Fruit," and in New Zealand, they are known as "Fruitli Golden Fruit."

What Garibaldi Biscuits Look Like

When you buy Garibaldi biscuits in a shop, they usually come in strips. Each strip has five biscuits. They have a shiny, golden-brown outside and a slightly sweet taste.

The most special thing about them is the layer of squashed fruit inside. Because of how the fruit looks, some people jokingly call them "fly sandwiches," "flies' graveyards," or "squashed fly biscuits." This is just a funny nickname because the dark fruit can look a bit like squashed flies!

The History of Garibaldi Biscuits

The Garibaldi biscuit is named after a famous Italian hero, Giuseppe Garibaldi. He was an important general who helped unite the country of Italy long ago. Garibaldi visited South Shields in England in 1854, and he was very popular.

The biscuit was first made in 1861. A company called Peek Freans in Bermondsey, England, started making them. They hired a great biscuit maker named Jonathan Carr to create this new treat.

In the United States, another company called Sunshine Biscuits made a popular version of the Garibaldi biscuit. They used raisins instead of currants and called them "Golden Fruit." Later, the Keebler Company bought Sunshine Biscuits. For a short time, Keebler made "Golden Fruit" biscuits with other fruits too. However, when Keebler became part of Kellogg's in 2001, the "Golden Fruit" line of biscuits was stopped.

In the past, you could sometimes find Garibaldi biscuits covered in plain or milk chocolate. But these special versions are not usually available anymore.
