The Story of Garland: How It Began
Garland started as a community around 1888. It was first called Sloan's Crossing.
Later, in 1907, it officially became a town and was named Garland. It got its name from Augustus Hill Garland, who was a U.S. Attorney General.

Interesting Facts About Garland
- Young Leaders: Austin Brown made history in Garland. In November 2017, at just 22 years old, he became the youngest commissioner in the town's history. He was later elected as the town's youngest Mayor Pro Tempore. In 2021, he became the Mayor of Garland.
- First Female and African American Mayor: Winifred Hill Murphy was appointed mayor in February 2012. She was the first woman and the first African American to serve as mayor for Garland. She was re-elected in 2013 and again in 2019.
- Cashwell Farms: Garland is home to Cashwell Farms. This farm is over 100 years old and is still active today. It is known for growing blueberries.
- Garland Shirt Company: A major employer in Garland is the Garland Shirt Company. This company makes shirts and other clothing items for the well-known brand Brooks Brothers.
- Community Events: The Garland Rotary Parade & Festival used to happen every first Saturday in October. It featured food, games, shops, and music on Front Street.
