Garn Gaynell Stephens (born November 7, 1944 – died April 14, 2023) was an American actress and writer. She worked in movies, TV shows, and on stage. She was well-known for her roles in the TV series Phyllis and the 1982 horror movie Halloween III: Season of the Witch.
Acting Career
Garn Stephens started her acting career on stage in plays. In 1971, she played Estelle in a play called Father's Day. The next year, she was the original character Jan in the famous Broadway musical Grease.
Throughout her 20-year career, Garn Stephens appeared in many television shows. She started in 1975 with a show called Wide World Mystery. She also had a guest role on the CBS sitcom All in the Family.
In 1976, Stephens got a main role in the TV comedy Phyllis. This show was a spin-off from The Mary Tyler Moore Show and starred Cloris Leachman. From the late 1970s to the early 1990s, Stephens appeared in other popular TV series. These included Charlie's Angels, Family Ties, Falcon Crest, and Quantum Leap.
Stephens also acted in three feature films. In 1975, she was in The Sunshine Boys with famous actors Walter Matthau and George Burns. She also appeared in a movie called Jake's M.O..
She is most famous for her role as Marge Guttman in the 1982 horror film Halloween III: Season of the Witch. Her husband at the time, Tom Atkins, also starred in this movie.
In 2003, Garn Stephens attended a special event called Halloween: 25 Years of Terror. There, she talked about how she got her role in Halloween III. She was friends with Adrienne Barbeau, who was married to director John Carpenter. Stephens had worked with Barbeau on Grease. Stephens met Carpenter when she and Atkins were invited to see a premiere of the first Halloween movie in 1978. Carpenter later offered her a role in Halloween III.
Writing Career
Besides acting, Garn Stephens was also a talented writer for television. In 1983, she wrote an episode for the medical drama series St. Elsewhere. For this work, she was nominated for an Emmy Award, which is a very important award for television.
She also wrote for other TV shows. These included Trapper John, M.D., Hotel, and Trial by Jury. Garn Stephens also wrote several crime-mystery stories.
Personal Life and Later Years
Garn Stephens was married to actor Tom Atkins for a time. She later lived with musician Stuart Niemi. They had one child together, named Spencer Baird Niemi.
Garn Stephens passed away in April 2023. She was 78 years old.
