Garry Lewis Jr. was born on August 25, 1967. He is a former American football player. He played as a cornerback, which is a defensive position. Garry Lewis played for four seasons in the National Football League (NFL). His NFL teams included the Los Angeles Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Kansas City Chiefs. He also played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) for the Ottawa Rough Riders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Early Life and College Football
Garry Lewis Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He went to Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans.
He played college football for the Alcorn State Braves. He was a key player for them from 1986 to 1989. In 2023, he was honored by being added to Alcorn State University's athletics hall of fame.
Playing in the NFL
Garry Lewis was chosen by the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1990 NFL draft. He was the 173rd player picked overall. He joined the Raiders in June 1990.
During the 1990 season, Lewis played in 12 games for the Raiders. He started five of those games. He also played in two playoff games that year and made one interception. In 1991, he played in all 16 games for the Raiders, starting two of them.
In 1992, Lewis was traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Later that year, he was traded again to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the Buccaneers, he played in all 16 games and started two. He also made one interception during the 1992 season.
Lewis then signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in September 1993. He played in one game for the Chiefs before leaving the team.
Playing in the CFL
After his time in the NFL, Garry Lewis moved to the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played for the Ottawa Rough Riders in 1994 and 1995. In 1994, he played in 14 games. He made 41 tackles and had one interception. He was known as a defensive halfback for the Rough Riders. In 1995, he played in five games for them, making 21 tackles and one interception.
In August 1995, Lewis joined the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, another CFL team. He played as a cornerback for them. He played in ten games for the Tiger-Cats in 1995. He had 25 tackles and made five interceptions that season. In 1996, he played in nine games and started all of them. He made 26 tackles and had one interception. He finished his playing career after the 1996 season.
After Football
After he stopped playing football, Garry Lewis continued to be involved with sports. He became the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance at Alcorn State University. This role involves making sure that the university's sports programs follow all the rules and regulations.
