He was nominated twice for the Governor General's Award for English-language poetry. This award is one of Canada's highest honors for writers. He was nominated for his books Discovery Passages in 2011 and Prairie Harbour in 2016. He was also nominated twice for the ReLit Award for his novels. These nominations were for Minor Episodes / Major Ruckus in 2013 and Rogue Cells / Carbon Harbour in 2014.
Garry Thomas Morse is from the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation. His book Discovery Passages explores an important part of his people's history. It talks about when the traditional Kwakwaka'wakw potlatch ceremony was banned. The book shows how this ban affected their culture and community.
Besides writing, he has also worked as an editor for publishing companies like Talonbooks. He grew up in British Columbia and now lives in Winnipeg. In 2023 and 2024, he was the Writer in Residence for the Saskatoon Public Library. This means he helped and inspired other writers in the community.
