After high school, Gary went to Anderson University in Indiana. After graduating, he moved to Chico, California. There, he worked for KHSL Radio. Later, he moved to KCRA-AM and KCRA TV, where he worked as a sports reporter.

In October 2015, Gary Gerould announced he was retiring from television sportscasting. However, he made a brief return on June 25, 2020. He became the TV play-by-play announcer for the Kings during the restart of the suspended NBA season. This happened after the previous announcer, Grant Napear, resigned.

Gary Gerould also runs his own public relations company. His son, Bob, also works as a sports broadcaster, following in his father's footsteps.
