Gary Grant was a talented American basketball player born on April 21, 1965. He played as a point guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and also spent four seasons playing professionally in Greece. Before turning pro, Gary was an amazing college player for the Michigan Wolverines, earning the title of an All-American.

College Basketball Career

Gary Grant, nicknamed "The General," played high school basketball at Canton McKinley High School. He then went on to play college basketball at the University of Michigan. He studied kinesiology, which is the study of body movement.

Gary Grant holds many impressive records at the University of Michigan. He started 128 games, which is more than any other player. He also has the most career assists with 731. Grant holds records for career steals, both total and per game. He also played the most minutes in Michigan's history.

He set records for single-season assists per game and single-season steals. He holds the top three spots for single-season steals, both total and per game.

Records Broken by Other Players

Over the years, some of Gary Grant's records were broken by other talented players.

  • During the 2010–11 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, Darius Morris broke Grant's single-season assist record. Gary had set this record during the 1987–88 season.
  • The next season, Trey Burke broke Grant's record for the most assists by a freshman.
  • In the final game of the 2016–17 season, Derrick Walton broke Grant's record for the most assists in a single game.

Professional Basketball Career

Gary Grant was chosen by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1988 NBA draft. However, his rights were quickly traded to the Los Angeles Clippers on the same night. This trade also included a future first-round draft pick for player Michael Cage.

Time with the Los Angeles Clippers

Gary Grant played for the Clippers for seven years. On April 4, 1989, he had an incredible game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He scored 17 points and made 20 assists. Those 20 assists were the most by any player in a single NBA game that entire season!

In the following season, Grant had his best year. He averaged 13.1 points, 10 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game.

Later NBA Teams and International Play

After his time with the Clippers, Gary Grant played for a few other NBA teams. He joined the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat, and the Portland Trail Blazers. He also played professional basketball for four seasons in Greece.

Personal Life

Gary Grant has three children named Taryn, Mahogany, and Piper, with Tammie Grant. He also had a small role in the 1992 movie Miracle Beach.
