Gary Grant was born on April 21, 1965. He is a retired American professional basketball player. He played as a point guard in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Gary also played professional basketball for four seasons in Greece.
College Basketball Career
Gary Grant was nicknamed "The General." He played high school basketball at Canton McKinley High School. After high school, he played college basketball for the University of Michigan. Gary earned a degree in kinesiology, which is the study of body movement.
Grant set many records at Michigan. He holds records for the most career starts (128 games). He also has the most career assists (731) and steals. He set records for total steals and steals per game. Gary also played the most minutes in Michigan's history.
He held records for single-season assists per game and single-season steals. He had the top three spots for both total steals and steals per game. Other players later broke some of his records. Darius Morris broke his single-season assist record in 2011. Trey Burke broke his freshman season assist record the next year. In 2017, Derrick Walton broke his single-game assists record.
Professional Basketball Career
Gary Grant was chosen in the 1988 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. On the same night, his rights were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. This trade included a future first-round pick for player Michael Cage.
On April 4, 1989, Gary had an amazing game against the Trail Blazers. He scored 17 points and made 20 assists. His 20 assists were the most by any player in the NBA that season. The next season (1989-90), Grant had his best year. He averaged 13.1 points, 10 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game.
He played for the Clippers for seven years. After that, he played for other NBA teams. These included the New York Knicks, the Miami Heat, and the Portland Trail Blazers.
Personal Life
Gary Grant has three children with Tammie Grant. Their names are Taryn, Mahogany, and Piper.
