Gary Leah Thomasson, born on July 29, 1951, is a former American professional baseball player. He played as an outfielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1972 to 1980. Gary Thomasson is best known for playing seven seasons with the San Francisco Giants. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Oakland Athletics. After his time in Major League Baseball, Thomasson played for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan's professional baseball league from 1981 to 1982. He was part of the Yankees team that won the 1978 World Series.

Gary Thomasson's Baseball Journey
Gary Thomasson went to Oceanside High School in Oceanside, California. The San Francisco Giants chose him in the 7th round of the 1969 Major League Baseball Draft. He played his first Major League game on September 5, 1972. He was 21 years old at the time. In that game, he pinch-hit for a pitcher in a game where the Giants won against the San Diego Padres. In 1973, which was his first full season in the Major Leagues, Thomasson had a batting average of .285 in 112 games.
Playing for Different Teams
Gary Thomasson was traded from the Giants to the Oakland Athletics on March 15, 1978. Several other players and money were part of this trade. He played only a few months and 47 games with the Oakland Athletics.
On June 15, 1978, he was traded again, this time to the New York Yankees. He moved teams once more about eight months later. On February 15, 1979, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Playing in Japan
After his Major League Baseball career, Gary Thomasson played in Japan. He joined the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Nippon Pro Baseball league on December 22, 1980. He played his last two professional seasons there, in 1981 and 1982. His career ended due to a knee injury.
Hyperart Thomasson
A writer and artist from Tokyo, Genpei Akasegawa, published a book that included photos of "found objects." He called these objects "Hyperart Thomasson." This book became very popular among young people in Japan in the late 1980s.
