Gaspard III de Coligny, Duke of Châtillon (1584–1646) was an important French military leader. He was a Huguenot, which means he was a French Protestant. Gaspard served King Louis XIII of France and became a Marshal of France in 1622. This was a very high military rank. People said he was a "loyal" general, even if he wasn't always the most brilliant in battle.
Early Life and Family
Gaspard III de Coligny was born on July 26, 1584, in a city called Montpellier, France. His father was François de Coligny, and his mother was Marguerite d'Ailly.
Gaspard came from a very famous family. His grandfather was Gaspard II de Coligny, who was a well-known Huguenot leader and an admiral.
In 1615, Gaspard III married Anne de Polignac. They had four children together: Maurice, Gaspard IV, Henriette de Coligny, and Anne.
Military Career
Gaspard III de Coligny spent many years serving France as a soldier. He fought in the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659).
One of the battles he took part in was the Battle of Les Avins in 1635. Later, in 1641, he led the Army of Champagne at the Battle of La Marfée. Sadly, his army was defeated in this battle.
After his military career, Gaspard retired to his home in Châtillon. He passed away there on January 4, 1646, when he was 61 years old.
