The gold-spotted marsupial frog (Gastrotheca aureomaculata) is a special kind of frog that lives in Colombia. It gets its name from the pretty gold spots on its skin. This frog is part of the Hemiphractidae family, which includes many interesting tree frogs.

These frogs are endemic to Colombia. This means they are found naturally only in Colombia and nowhere else in the world. They live in specific places like moist montane forests (forests on mountains), near rivers, and in freshwater marshes. You might even find them in gardens or areas where forests used to be. Sadly, the gold-spotted marsupial frog is currently threatened because its habitat (the place where it lives) is being lost.

What Makes Marsupial Frogs Special?

Marsupial frogs are unique because of how they care for their young. Unlike most frogs that lay eggs in water, female marsupial frogs carry their eggs in a special pouch on their back. This pouch is a lot like the pouch a kangaroo uses to carry its baby!

How Do They Reproduce?

When it's time to lay eggs, the female frog releases them. The male frog then fertilizes the eggs. After this, the male helps to place the fertilized eggs into the female's back pouch. The eggs stay safe and moist inside this pouch as they develop.

Life Cycle in the Pouch

The eggs develop inside the mother's pouch until they are ready to hatch. Depending on the species, the eggs might hatch into tiny tadpoles that are then released into water, or they might develop directly into small froglets. This special way of carrying eggs helps protect the young from predators and keeps them from drying out. For the gold-spotted marsupial frog, the eggs develop directly into froglets inside the pouch. This means they skip the tadpole stage in water.

Where Do Gold-Spotted Marsupial Frogs Live?

These frogs are found in the beautiful country of Colombia, which is located in South America. They prefer cool, moist environments high up in the mountains. Their natural homes are often surrounded by lush plants and clean water sources.

Their Mountain Homes

The gold-spotted marsupial frog lives in subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. These are forests found on the slopes of mountains in warmer regions. The air here is often humid, and there is plenty of rainfall, which is perfect for frogs.

Water and Gardens

Besides forests, they can also be found near rivers and in freshwater marshes. Sometimes, they even adapt to living in rural gardens. This shows they can be quite resilient, but they still need healthy environments to survive.

Why Are They Endangered?

The gold-spotted marsupial frog is listed as an endangered species. This means there aren't many of them left, and they are at risk of disappearing forever. The biggest reason for this is habitat loss.

Loss of Habitat

When forests are cut down for farming, building, or other human activities, these frogs lose their homes. Pollution of rivers and marshes also harms them. Protecting their natural habitats is very important to help these unique frogs survive.
