Hemiphractidae is a family of frogs. These special frogs are sometimes called "pouch frogs" or "backpack frogs." They live in South and Central America. What makes them unique is how they raise their young!
Reproduction
Most frogs lay their eggs in water, and the eggs hatch into tadpoles. But Hemiphractidae frogs do things differently! The female frog carries her eggs right on her back.
In many of these species, the eggs develop directly into tiny froglets. This means there is no free-swimming tadpole stage. The little froglets hatch directly from the eggs on their mother's back. Some types even have a special pouch on their back where the eggs stay safe until they hatch. It's like a built-in nursery!
Kinds of Hemiphractidae Frogs
The Hemiphractidae family includes several different groups, called genera (plural of genus). A genus is a group of very similar animals. Here are some of the genera in this family:
- Cryptobatrachus - These are known as Backpack Frogs.
- Flectonotus - Another group of these unique frogs.
- Gastrotheca - These are often called Marsupial Frogs because of their pouch.
- Hemiphractus - These are sometimes called Horned Treefrogs.
- Stefania - These are known as Carrying Frogs.
