Gata
Type Pastry or bread
Place of origin Armenia

Gata (pronounced gah-TAH, and written as Armenian: գաթա in Armenian) is a delicious pastry or sweet bread from Armenia. Think of it like a special sweet treat! There are many different kinds of gata across Armenia. Each town or region often has its own unique way of making it.

Gata can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are round, some are triangular, and some are left plain while others are beautifully decorated. Long ago, people used to bake gata in a special clay oven called a tonir. Today, it's usually baked in regular ovens, just like the ones we have at home.

What is Gata Made Of?

Gata often has a yummy filling called koritz (or khoriz). This filling is made from flour, butter, and sugar, giving it a sweet, crumbly texture. Sometimes, gata can have other fillings too, like walnuts, which are a popular choice.

Special Traditions with Gata

One fun tradition involves hiding a coin inside the dough before the gata is baked. It's believed that the person who finds the coin in their piece will have good luck! This makes eating gata even more exciting.

Gata is traditionally eaten during the feast of Candlemas, which is a special holiday. However, it's also enjoyed during other celebrations or simply as a tasty snack with a cup of tea or coffee.

Different Kinds of Gata

Just like there are many types of cookies or cakes, there are many types of gata!

Gata from Garni and Geghard

In the villages of Garni and Geghard, gata is usually round and quite large, often about a foot (30 cm) across. Before baking, these gatas are often decorated with pretty patterns on top.

Gata from Tsovinar

Near the southern part of Lake Sevan, in a town called Tsovinar, they make a different kind of gata. This version is usually denser and sweeter. It's often baked in a triangular shape and doesn't have any koritz filling or decorations.

No matter the shape or filling, gata is a beloved Armenian treat that brings people together!
