Isla de Gatas, often called Gatas, is a small piece of land in southern Puerto Rico. It is located in the Playa area of Ponce. Since the 1950s, it has been connected to the main island of Puerto Rico. This connection makes it a "tied island."
Isla de Gatas is home to the Club Náutico de Ponce. This is a private sports club with a marina. The island is found south of La Guancha and the Port of Ponce. Isla de Gatas is one of seven islands in the Ponce area. The other islands include Caja de Muertos, Morrillito, Ratones, Cardona, Isla del Frio, and Isla de Jueyes.
Where is Isla de Gatas Located?
Even though it is called an island, Isla de Gatas is now physically joined to the main island of Puerto Rico. This happened because a special wall, called a dike, was built in the 1950s. This dike connects the island to the mainland. Because of this, it is more like a cape than a true island.
The dike helped the island grow from its original size of about one acre to its current size of 13 acres. Isla de Gatas is located about 0.12 miles (0.2 kilometers) south of the Puerto Rican shore. It stretches about 0.31 miles (0.5 kilometers) from east to west. The island is about 10 feet high and has a beach on its western side.

Isla de Gatas is a small, low-lying area that has been fully developed. The main feature on the island is the Club Náutico de Ponce. This club includes a marina where boats can dock. It is a popular spot for water sports and activities.
