History of Gateway Mall
Gateway Mall first opened in 1960. Back then, it was called Gateway Shopping Center. It was built by Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska, which is now Ameritas Life Insurance Company. The mall was an open-air center, meaning it didn't have a roof covering all the walkways. Its main stores were Montgomery Ward and a local department store called Miller & Paine.
Early Expansions
A big expansion happened in 1971. A department store called Brandeis was added. It was built right next to Miller & Paine, which was unusual for malls. This expansion also included covering the mall walkways, making it an enclosed mall. A new Sears store was also built.
More changes came in 1995 and 1996. A new section was added, leading to a JCPenney department store. JCPenney had moved from downtown Lincoln to a different shopping area behind the mall. During this time, the original open-air parts of the mall were also covered. A food court, where people could buy food, was built in the southern part of the main area.
Modern Updates
From 2004 to 2005, the mall had a big renovation that cost $45 million. A new food court was built, and a carousel was added in the main center area. The old Montgomery Ward space, which had been empty since 2001, was updated. It became home to a new Steve and Barry's store and a Qdoba Mexican Grill.
The ownership of the mall has changed several times. Bankers Life sold the mall in 1985. Then, Westfield Group bought it in 2001. In 2012, Starwood Capital Group became the new owner. JLL Associates manages the mall today.
In June 2013, several new stores opened. This included Forever 21, which took over one floor of the old Montgomery Ward/Steve & Barry's space.
Recent Changes
In June 2016, it was announced that Dick's Sporting Goods would build a large store at the mall. This 70,000-square-foot store opened on September 22, 2017. It was built where Granite City Food & Brewery used to be.
On April 18, 2018, the department store Younkers announced it would close. Its parent company was going out of business. The Younkers store at Gateway Mall closed on August 29, 2018.
Then, on December 28, 2018, Sears also announced its closure. This was part of a plan to close many stores across the country. The Sears store at Gateway Mall closed in March 2019.
On November 19, 2019, Forever 21 announced it would close many of its stores, including the one at Gateway Mall. That store closed on November 23, 2019.
