A Look Back at the Gateway of Dreams
In 1996, the city of Atlanta hosted the Centennial Olympic Games. These were very important because they marked 100 years since the first modern Olympic Games.
Centennial Olympic Park was created right in downtown Atlanta to celebrate these games. Many people see the park as the main reminder of the Olympics in the city.
The Gateway of Dreams monument was put up in 1996, the same year the park opened. It honors Pierre de Coubertin because he started the modern Olympic Games 100 years earlier, with the 1896 Summer Olympics.
The monument was designed by Raymond Kaskey. It includes a step pyramid shape and tall columns. There is also a statue of Coubertin himself. This monument is one of several in the area that remember the Olympic Games. For example, there's also "The Flair" near where the Georgia Dome used to be. In June 2020, the statue of Coubertin was marked with some white paint.
