History of Gaviña Coffee
Starting in Cuba
The Gaviña company was started by two brothers, José María and Ramón Gaviña. They moved from Spain to Cuba in 1870. In Cuba, they had their own coffee farm, called a plantation, in the city of Trinidad. They grew coffee beans there.
In the 1930s, the company grew bigger. Besides growing coffee, they also started roasting the coffee beans. Roasting is the process of heating coffee beans to bring out their flavor.
Moving to the United States
In 1959, the Gaviña family left Cuba. Eight years later, in 1967, they started a new company in Vernon, California. They named it F. Gaviña & Sons Inc.
At first, the company focused on roasting coffee in the Cuban style. But over time, they began to make different coffee blends. These blends were made to suit the tastes of people from various cultures, including those from the Middle East and Vietnam.
How Gaviña Operates Today
Selling Coffee in Stores
By 2002, Gaviña's whole-bean coffee was very popular. It was the best-selling brand in grocery stores across Los Angeles. Their ground coffee was also very popular, ranking third after Folgers and Maxwell House. Because of this success, the company decided to sell its coffee in more supermarkets across the United States.
Working with Restaurants
Gaviña started selling coffee to a few McDonald's restaurants in Southern California in 1983. By 2005, they had created a stronger coffee blend for McDonald's. This new blend helped McDonald's sell much more coffee. Gaviña became one of only three companies in the U.S. chosen to make espresso for McDonald's McCafe program.
A Growing Business
By 2010, Gaviña was roasting about 40 million pounds of coffee every year. It was a large business, earning about $114 million. A big part of their earnings came from making and packaging coffee for other companies. These included well-known stores like McDonald's, 7-Eleven, and Costco.
The Gaviña company is still owned by the family today. They continue to make different coffee roasts for various cultural tastes. They also supply coffee to many supermarkets, such as Ralphs, Walmart, and Safeway. You can find their coffee, including the Don Francisco and La Llave brands, in 20 different states across the country.
